Custom of the Week #12

Nike Air Max 1 “The Architect” by Weerd’O Custom

This week’s featured custom reached us from the Netherlands – the Nike Air Max 1 “The Architect” by Weerd’O Custom.

Why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Kay aka Weerd’O Custom. I’m 33 years old, 1.98 m tall an dad of two princesses. I was born in the Netherlands, the country known for its openminded way of thinking and clogs. Even though I love Dutch culture, I know I could beat that wooden shoe in style.

What are your favourite shoes to customise?

Though I like creating things, I love customising my Nikes. I’m a total sneakerfreak perfectionist. My girlfriend hates me for it because when I customise something its always exactly the way I pictured it. I Just Do It.

Sometimes I spend all of my free time in perfecting my beloved Nike Air Max 1. It’s my favourite shoe to work with – the way the shape flows, the slim nose, the sole. I have 15 pairs of 1s myself.

My favourite custom job was “The Architect” I made for my brother-in-law who’s an architect in Amsterdam. I gave them as a present for the opening of his architect agency and they are now on display on his designer bookshelf. I converted his architect number in the lip and on the wooden shoe box I made to match it. I loved doing the camo print on it the most, as I painted this off the cuff.

What would it take to get customising in Europe as big as it is in the US?

I wish customising was as big here as it is in the US. I think the problem is that it doesn’t get promoted as much here. Maybe if some Dutch celebrities were just as nuts about these sneakers as I am, it would be more popular. Maybe I should introduce them to some of my work so they would rock it!
